THE NOTORIOUS SPY The Notorious Spy is a novel based upon Colquhoun Grant’s own account of his capture by the French in 1812. He was Wellington’s most valued intelligence officer in the Peninsular War recording enemy movements, composition and strength. To the French he was a dangerous spy fit only for the bullet or a rope, but as he operated at all times in uniform he could justly claim that he was an English officer going openly about his profession. Captured in Portugal, he posed a moral problem both to the French and to himself. How he resolved the dilemma and reacted to it makes a gripping and eventful story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It reads like a spy novel, yet is a well-researched work of non-fiction. Truly an amazing story. I also appreciated that Mr. Pelly added a section at the end that summarized Mr. Grant's life after the events in this book.Product details

The Notorious Spy Antony Pelly 9781523314225 Books Reviews
A thoroughly entertaining and palatable way of learning about a particular historical period. Meticulous research and attention to period detail which never intrudes on a rattling good yarn but provides a thoroughly real and three dimensional backdrop for the story. The book raises interesting moral questions for its eponymous protagonist which are brought to life for the contemporary reader. All characters are drawn vividly, even minor ones - a quick sketch lives and breathes - and this adds to the colour and substance of the novel. A gripping and entertaining way to learn about Wellington's campaign but a thoroughly enjoyable and well written novel in its own right.
Previously not one with much interest in history that precedes my grandfathers, this book broadens my horizons in a most enjoyable and enlightening way.
The story from the peninsular war in the early nineteenth century, based on carefully researched historical records, tells of the hair-raising exploits of Lord Wellington's "notorious spy". Suspense is palpable on every page. The saga is brought into sharp focus by the author's knowledge of location, terrain, architecture, scenery, military organization and means of warfare of the period. The reader is vividly thrust into the hero's mental anxieties as events buffet him from one predicament to another.
The story of this gallant man is well worth the telling. The book is well worth the reading.
If you enjoy the Sharpe books, you will probably find this one enjoyable too. The novel is based on the exploits of one of the Duke of Wellington's scots who, so as not to be shot as spies if caught by the enemy, rode behind enemy lines in full uniform; so that if caught they would be treated as prisoners of war. Enjoyable read, even if you don't normally read war stories.
I had expected this to be a biography but instead was fiction based on later remembrances told to various friends and relatives, collected and tied together with a narrative. Little on his services in Spain, mostly about his adventures in France. Some (or many) facts changed to make a good yarn.
I began reading this book at 900 at night when I was deathly tired. It was such a gripping narrative that I woke up while reading it and stayed up until 1230 reading almost half of it. The next night I finished it at 100 in the morning. I have seldom read such a fascinating story. This is the kind of book that is difficult to put down, and I would not have put it down the first night if I did not have to get up early the next day. It is obvious from the epilogue that it is very well researched. It causes history to come alive when one is reading it. If more books like this were to be written, perhaps we could all be better educated as to the human side of history. Kudos to Antony Pelly for writing a book well worth the reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It reads like a spy novel, yet is a well-researched work of non-fiction. Truly an amazing story. I also appreciated that Mr. Pelly added a section at the end that summarized Mr. Grant's life after the events in this book.
